How Can You Protect Yourself From Environmental Toxins?

If you’re concerned about the high level of environmental toxins your body needs to filter and process each day, you’re not alone. Even 100 years ago, our ancestors were breathing, eating, and drinking far fewer chemicals than what we deal with today. Take into consideration the following ideas for lowering your exposure to toxins: Make sure you’re drinking clean water; a filter will do the trick. Carry water in aluminum, glass, or stainless steel, avoiding plastic in general (due to the risk of chemical leaching). You’ll protect yourself from chemicals such as BPA, which is a known carcinogen. While you’re thinking about what you drink, make sure to avoid beverages made with artiificial sweeteners, coloring, and flavorings.

Make sure you are breathing the cleanest air possible. Simple air filters can make a huge difference since sophisticated filters are capable of removing most contaminants. Use face masks when you have to use chemicals or are doing household projects like painting or auto care.

Reduce use of chemicals in general. Don’t allow smokers to smoke inside the house, and refuse to buy chemically based air fresheners, cleaners, or candles. Use natural cleaning products like baking soda and vinegar so your house smells clean and fresh, not masking odors with heavy chemical smells. Use only natural candles, and burn them outside when possible, or at least with windows open. Replace Teflon-coated pans with stainless steel.

Eat organic. It may be more expensive upfront, but the longterm health savings may very well be worth it. Always scrub fresh produce with water and a safe soap so you remove any residual pesticides–even organic foods can be contaminated by water or air pollution. Grow your own produce whenever possible, investing in a greenhouse and learning how to make organic fertilizers and pest repellants. When cooking, use fresh herbs and spices instead of pre-packaged, preservative-laden seasoning mixes.

Contract with a green renovator. You may wish to take out carpet (chemicals!) and replace it with natural clay tile floors, or make other such changes.

If you invest in avoiding environmental toxins now, you’ll save yourself from having to detoxify so much in the future.
