What To Eat To Lower Your Cholesterol

You are putting yourself at many health risks that you could easily avoid if you have high cholesterol. In addition to being bad for the heart and the circulatory system of the boy, high cholesterold has also been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s. You can avoid the cognitive and bodily degeneration that can result from high cholesterol if you learn to lower your cholesterol, or – if your cholesterol is already at a good level – to keep your cholesterol where it is.

One of the easiest and most effective ways you can lower your cholesterol is by paying attention to what you eat. If you want to lower your cholesterol, all four of these foods can help.

1) High fiber foods such as oatmeal and oat bran: these foods contain soluble fiber, which lowers the bad cholesterol. Such fruits as apples and pears also contain soluble fiber. By getting five to ten grams of soluble fiber per day, you will vastly improve your cholesterol levels. One bowl of oatmeal alone contains six grams of soluble fiber; a single banana contains four grams.

2) Omega-3 fatty acids: fish is the main food in which you will find omega-3 fatty acids. Fish can reduce your blood pressure and lessen the risk of blood clots; for this reason, doctors generally recommend eating a minimum of two servings of fish per week.

3) Walnuts and almonds: As long as you are not eating nuts that are salted or sugar-coated, such nuts as walnuts, almonds, and other nuts can reduce the risk of heart disease.

4) Olive oil: you can lower your bad cholesterol while leaving your good cholesterol untouched if you have two tablespoons of olive oil per day. Search specifically for extra virgin olive oil, as this is the least processed and is, therefore, the best for your body.

You can do plenty to lower your cholesterol, even outside of changes to your diet. But learning the good foods to eat, as well as the foods that you should avoid, is a good starting point for lowering your cholesterol, and to lead a healthier lifestyle as a result.
